Community 1 is located on the western part of the country, in the departamento of León, roughly fifty kilometers away from Managua along the Managua-Leon road. The community’s main economic activities are trade, stockbreeding and agriculture. Located in a dry and warm climate area, the main crops cultivated are sesame, beans, corn, watermelon, sorghum and yucca, along with other vegetables. To a lesser extent, people in the municipio are engaged in craft industries. There are some cooperatives and collective associations that produce clay tiles and bricks, which are sold in various parts of the country. Artisans also work with materials such as wood and palm tree leaves to create a variety of crafts and utensils. Another popular economic activity is the production of tiste (a cold drink) and quesillo (fresh cheese), which are sold along the Managua-Leon roadside. Some vendors travel daily to Managua or León to sell their products in those cities.
At present, the municipio features a fair diversity of basic social services. There are twenty-eight elementary schools and three secondary education schools, along with one health center and nine minor health offices, altogether which altogether serve around 13,000 people. The city is also connected to the national telephone network, and has postal and telegraphic services. The (drinkable) water system is concentrated in the urban portion of the municipio. However, there is no sanitary sewage system in either the rural or the urban area.
