Community 3 is located in the Northern side of the country, within the province of Alajuela. Yet, the greater region is economically independent from Central Costa Rica since it is geographically separated from it by the country’s Central mountain range. The weather, variable and relatively rainy, is typical from the Caribbean part of the country.

This community is one of the economic nodes of the Northern area of the country. It mainly relies on services and commerce, partly a result of the stockbreeding and agricultural activities practiced in the region. These products are sold in national and export markets. The main crops are cereals grains, a diversity of starchy tubers, and citrus fruits.

Basic health services are readily available within the community. There is a regional hospital within the city that covers treatment of medium complexity. Educational services are also accessible, as they are in the municipality in general. Resources include all the range from elementary schools to a couple of small universities.

The majority of dwellings in the community are connected to both the water and electric supply systems; they are also equipped with sewage disposal, and most have telephone service. Most of the streets in the community are paved. There are also a few local radio stations and a local newspaper, as well as one TV station.
