The data in LAMP-Costa Rica Database (LAMP-CR7) were gathered during April-May of 2000 (community 1), July-August 2002 (communities 2, 3, 4), and November-December 2002 (communities 5, 6, and 7). For confidentiality reasons, we preserve community names.

The surveys in Costa Rica were made possible through an association between the LAMP and the Central American Population Center of the University of Costa Rica (click here to find out more) .

It is located in the north-central area of the Alajuela province at about 44 km of San Jose. Its name means "moving land" and comes from an indigenous group known as "güetar" (this group is already extinct). This community is located in the area known as "camino viajo a Puntarenas", which is the route where coffee is exported. Its adjacent location to two other communities whose socioeconomic development is moderate has restrained its autonomous development. This community lacks of own transportation, depending on the adjacent community's local transportation to commute to Alajuela.

This community has an extended handcraft tradition that specializes in wooden products, which is known throughout the country. Its craftsmen produce furniture as well as small crafts, attracting national and international tourism
